Pollinator Gardens Program
Pollinator Gardens

Keep Ohio Beautiful has taken significant steps to enhance biodiversity and support pollinators by establishing numerous pollinator gardens across the state. These gardens include:

  1. Ohio Statehouse Gardens: Seven gardens in collaboration with the Capital Square Review Board, Davey Resource Group, Inc., and Scotts Miracle-Gro Company.
  2. Ohio Turnpike Gardens: Eight gardens at various travel centers along the Ohio Turnpike, created in partnership with Davey Resource Group, Inc., and the Ohio Turnpike & Infrastructure Commission.
  3. Camp Willson Garden in Bellefontaine: Our largest pollinator garden, established with the support of the Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative and Honda.
  4. Powers Elementary School Garden in Amherst: The newest addition, developed in partnership with Davey Resource Group, Inc. and Columbia Gas of Ohio.

Importance of Planting Native Pollinator Plants

Planting native pollinator plants is crucial for the health of Ohio's ecosystems. Native plants are adapted to the local climate, soil, and other environmental conditions, making them more resilient and beneficial to the local wildlife. They provide essential nectar, pollen, and habitat for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, which are vital for the pollination of many crops and wild plants.

Benefits to Species in Ohio

  • Support for Pollinators: Native plants help sustain Ohio's pollinator populations, which are essential for the pollination of agricultural crops, contributing to the state's economy and food supply.
  • Biodiversity Enhancement: By planting a variety of native species, these gardens increase the biodiversity of the area, offering food and habitat for a wide range of insects, birds, and other wildlife.
  • Ecosystem Stability: Native plants help maintain healthy soil and water systems, prevent erosion, and reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides, leading to more sustainable and resilient ecosystems.

These efforts by Keep Ohio Beautiful not only beautify the state but also play a critical role in preserving Ohio's natural heritage and ensuring the health of its ecosystems for future generations.
