Keep Ohio Beautiful’s Litter-Free School Zone program encourages schools across the state to take pride in their surroundings by creating a cleaner, healthier environment for students, staff, and the community. Through this initiative, students are empowered to play a vital role in reducing litter, learning about environmental stewardship, and fostering community responsibility.

What is the Litter-Free School Zone Program?

The Litter-Free School Zone program provides a unique opportunity for schools to adopt their campus and surrounding areas, ensuring they remain free of litter. Participating schools receive resources and support to engage students in litter cleanups and educational activities that promote the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

How the Program Works

1. School Enrollment: Schools interested in participating sign up for the program and designate a Litter-Free Zone on their campus or in nearby public spaces.

2. Educational Materials: Additional materials are available at our Waste in Place page

3. Community Engagement: Schools are encouraged to engage with local communities, parents, and businesses to support their efforts and expand the impact of their litter prevention activities.

4. Recognition and Incentives: Schools that demonstrate commitment to maintaining their Litter-Free Zone are recognized with a Litter-Free School Zone Certificate. Additionally, outstanding schools may be featured in Keep Ohio Beautiful’s social media and newsletters, celebrating their contribution to a cleaner Ohio.

5. Minimum Requirements from the School: Click here - Litter Free School Zone Reporting Form
   • Check the school grounds two times a year, or more often at your discretion, and remove litter.
   • Report the date of each cleanup completed, number of participants, hours worked and number of full bags of trash collected to Keep Ohio Beautiful after each cleanup or two times a year if cleanups are held more often.
   • Promote and report results of Litter Free School Zone activities in school publications, on bulletin boards and other places where appropriate.
   • Make safety a top priority.
   • Provide written notice to Keep Ohio Beautiful and remove signage in the event that the school wishes to terminate the program or if it becomes
6. ‍Keep Ohio Beautiful Provides:
   • Attractive signage for your school designating it as a litter free zone.
   • Media coverage publicizing your school’s involvement through our newsletter, news releases,
     Facebook and Twitter.
   • Helpful and responsive assistance from staff.
